The Grain

You are nothing more than a grain of salt on my tongue
a speck of sand in my teeth
the light of a single star over this city
But I can still taste you
I can still feel you
I can still see you through the neon cathedrals
burning your way through the dark
Had you been the sun
I could have found shade
Had you been the wind
I could have pulled my sail
Instead you are the North Pole
and I am the compass needle drawing
Instead you are the lighthouse
and I am the captain of this star-crossed soul
praying my hands will have the courage today to defy you.
